- Already in existence during the reign of Vespasian (r.69-79)
- Production of olive oil
- Expanded: baths, forum with an honorific gate (dedicated to Antoninus Pius) and three(!) Capitol temples, nymphaeum, theater
- In the third century CE, the city replaces Thysdrus as main center of the region
- c.300 CE: Arch of Diocletian
- Byzantine churches: Basilica of Bellator with chapel of Jucundus, Basilica of Vitalis, Basilica of Servus, Basilica of Gervase, Protase, and Tryphon
- After 439-533/534: Vandal rule
- Briefly the capital of a small, independent state, led by the exarch of Carthage, Gregory the Patrician, who fights against the Byzantines and Arabs
- 647: Gregory is killed in action. Kairouan is the new capital of Ifriqiya
